Organized by Sharon, the home’s activity coordinator, Catherine House Care Home hosted a memorable tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
On 6th June, the care home’s residents, fondly referred to as family members, gathered in the transformed car park to join the team in a collaborative celebration of D-Day’s heroes.
Specifically, the event honored family member Colin Powell, who served in the Royal Navy for 24 years and participated in the Falkland War. The team set up a gazebo with camouflage netting, nodding to the historic battlegrounds of World War II. Moreover, they decorated tables with period-inspired items, including ration books and gas masks as centrepieces, along with D-Day anniversary balloons and banners.
Additionally, family members of Catherine House immersed themselves in the wartime atmosphere with army helmets and strategically placed sandbags, creating a battlefront ambiance. Furthermore, the team served a classic lunch featuring sandwiches with various fillings, blancmange, and bread pudding.
Meanwhile, Danny Jukebox provided musical entertainment, offering songs from the 1920s to the 1960s. For many, music evoked emotions and feelings from times past, allowing family members to journey through the decades and experience a bygone era.
Ultimately, Catherine House’s philosophy focuses on nurturing independence and embracing spontaneous moments. Through activities like this, the care home aims to create an environment where family members feel empowered to explore new experiences and forge meaningful connections beyond their immediate community.
