Recently, Catherine House Care Home was visited again by Sing-a-Ling, a music and movement group based in Somerset, which hosts fun workshops led by Willow. This heartwarming initiative, known as The Kindness Connection, brings together young children and care home residents, which Catherine House fondly refers to as family members, to share the joy of music, movement, and connection.
During the visit, the room was filled with energy and smiles as residents and children bonded over music-making. Willow, the creative force behind the project, explained:
“Opportunities to interact with elders in our community, and vice versa, are few and far between. The Kindness Connection brings people together who would normally never meet. The musical nature of the group enables us to relax in each other’s company and bond over a shared experience.”
The visit proved particularly special for Alan, one of Catherine House’s beloved family members, who was left “grinning from ear to ear” after receiving a handmade card from one of the visiting children. Catherine House Administrator Sherin Anup described it as a “lovely sight”, reflecting the deep impact of these meaningful intergenerational moments.
Willow also took time to connect individually with residents, even giving a family member an impromptu guitar lesson.
Willow added:
“Observing how the room lights up when the children arrive is magical. I am told that our visits are eagerly awaited by the residents and talked about long after we have left. Being surrounded by children and babies whilst we sing and play music together brings smiles to the faces of everyone involved.
Children pass no judgement whatsoever and view the residents merely as ‘grown ups’, irrespective of their ability. The children eagerly hand out instruments and props so that everyone can be involved.
Those living with Dementia are often deeply engaged with the singing and recite many of the songs with confidence. It’s a beautiful thing to witness a room full of people, sometimes with a 100-year age gap, all singing the same thing and each taking something positive away from the experience.”
The Kindness Connection continues to demonstrate the profound benefits of intergenerational interactions and improving well-being. These uplifting visits are especially meaningful during the Christmas season, a time when older people can often feel more isolated. Catherine House Care Home is proud to host this initiative and looks forward to future visits from Willow and the Sing-a-Ling group.
