From plumbing repairs to fire safety checks, Evolve Care Group recently held a hands-on maintenance training day held at Evolve’s training academy in Bristol.
Designed around real-life moments in care, bringing together skilled and valued maintenance teams from Evolve’s homes across the SouthWest. The day was a chance to connect, share peer support, stay up to date with new systems and policies and meet with and receive training from qualified contractors.
The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Jodie Williams (Estates Lead) and Tracy Webber (Operations Manager). From the morning icebreakers that brought a few laughs and set the tone for open, honest conversations.
Throughout this training, one thing was clear: maintenance isn’t just about buildings, it’s about people.
Learning That Fits Real Life
Led by Mark Webber from Central Flow, the morning sessions were all about plumbing essentials. From isolating pipes to replacing toilet components, it was practical, clear, and built around the kind of faults teams actually face every day. It wasn’t just about what to do, but why, helping teams feel more confident and capable in the moment.
The afternoon shifted to electrics, led by Mars Electrical, and focused on staying safe and knowing the limits of what can be done in-house. Then came a collaborative session led by Jodie on Microsoft Forms, opening the floor for questions and ideas on how to improve reporting and communication.
To finish the day, Doug Drummond (Project Manager) took the team on a fire door walk-through, encouraging everyone to spot issues, ask questions, and share what they see in their own homes.
Throughout this training, one thing was clear: maintenance isn’t just about buildings, it’s about people. Team Member Kyle shared, “We get to know the family members just as much as everybody else in the homes. Of course, we don’t support with personal care, but we see them every day for a simple chat, sometimes even bake cakes together. It makes the job feel meaningful.”
Tracy summed up the energy of the day “The training has been really well received by the teams. There was a great atmosphere in the room!”
