There are some outings that stay with people long after they return home and the visit to Santa’s Grotto at Critchill Manor Estate in Somerset was one of them.

For many who live at Catherine House Care Home in Somerset, it wasn’t only about meeting Santa, it was the familiarity of the scene, the small details that stirred memories, and the sense of being part of something recognisable at this time of year.

As the home’s minibus pulled to a stop, Santa’s helpers greeted the group as they arrived along with Activities Co-ordinator, Sharon.  The festive day immediately began with family member Kathleen commenting on how amazing it all looked as she went into the elf’s workshop.

Ruby, another family member in the group, wasted no time asking about Santa’s whereabouts – she fully intended to sit on his lap and remind him how well she’s behaved this year!  She shared with the group “wow wow it looks fabulous!”  There was no hiding her admiration for Santa, and at one point she asked Mrs Claus if she might take him home!  Mrs Claus laughed and said he had far too many presents to deliver for that.

As the group settled into the warmth of the grotto, a wonderful conversation with Kathleen and Mrs Claus opened the door to old memories. Childhood stories began to surface, and Kathleen shared how meaningful it was to feel those moments returning – reminders that play such an important role in holding on to life’s histories.

Before the group said their goodbyes, they were given a gift and headed over to the club house to enjoy a hot drink and some mince pies, and biscuits arranged by relatives of family member Patrick who runs the club house.

Looking back on the day, Registered Nurse Aaron reflected “it truly is the most wonderful time of the year, and the Catherine House family felt that magic during their visit to one of Frome’s enchanting Christmas villages, Santa’s Grotto. For me, one of the most unforgettable moments was seeing Monica exchange playful remarks with Santa and Mrs. Claus, her laughter was contagious.”

Catherine House, located in the town centre of Frome, will continue sharing updates from the home’s seasonal activities in the weeks ahead.
