A recent trip for Catherine House Care Home saw a small group of residents, fondly referred to as family members, head to a local farm in their mini bus just as lambing season was underway, visiting Shepherd’s Retreat Farm, with time spent feeding lambs, walking around the pens and taking in the sounds and movement of the yard.
The lambs quickly became the focus of the morning. Bottles were held out and gently guided, with a few of them pushing forward with more enthusiasm than others. One family member described the lambs simply as “gorgeous”, recalling how they moved around together and gathered close.
Although sadly her sight is limited, she spoke about still being able to make out their shape and movement, which stayed with her afterwards. At one point, there was talk about how nice it would be to take one home, with someone joking it could be hidden under a blanket on the minibus!
The chickens had their moment too, wandering nearby and drawing a few comments, including someone suggesting they looked as though they were trying to follow everyone back.
After the visit, the group stopped for something to eat. Over burgers, chips and coffee, family member Barbara reflected on the meal, mentioning how it surprised her, saying “I’m not normally good with things, especially with chips but by crumbs that was good!”
Back at home, the morning was still being talked about. Barbara shared how she had seen four baby lambs and spoke about them as if they had been sat on her lap, going over the moment again with the team.
It was a simple morning out, but one that created conversation, humour and small moments that was enjoyed by all.
