Recently, family members from Catherine House Care Home in Frome, headed out to Southwick Country Park to spend time together and stay connected with the wider community.

The visit began with a stop at the park café after the journey over in the home’s minibus, with hot drinks and nibbles before heading out to meet some of the park’s residents.

Almost as soon as they stepped off the bus, they came across the pigs. Family member Barbara was quick to share how much she loves them, but fellow family member Ruby (being Ruby), couldn’t help but joke that they were “just the right size for a bacon sandwich!”

The park provided a space for genuine surprise and experience. One family member encountered a wallaby for the first time in his life and expressed his shock that they could live in the cold English weather, having always associated them with Australia.

A day out at Southwick Country Park, where familiar routines met new experiences — time outdoors, shared moments, and the freedom to explore at each person’s own pace.

The outing also prioritised autonomy and a sense of purpose. Family member Malcolm took the opportunity to explore the grounds in his electric wheelchair, navigating his own route, he enjoyed the independence of the open paths, while staying within the reassuring sight of the team.

The walk was filled with a wonderful sense of character thanks to Alan, who shared his love of music by singing ‘Just One Cornetto’ throughout the afternoon. His personality really shone through when the group reached the sheep; as they gathered closely around him, Alan playfully asked one curious sheep, ‘What are you looking at, you ugly buggar?’ It was a moment of light-heartiness that perfectly captured his sense of humour.

Meanwhile, Ruby found a deep sense of engagement with the goats, calling them over to the fence for some cuddles.

To round out the day, the group made a classic “pit stop” at Greggs on the way home. Everyone enjoyed a variety of pastries, a simple and familiar treat that brought the day to a satisfying close.

These intentional activities are more than just trips, they are tools that allow family members at Catherine House Care Home to maintain their personalities, share a laugh, and stay connected to the world around them.
